Travelling in North East earlier required permits. But recently to encourage more tourism in the region the government has relaxed rules with respect to permit. However a valid Indian Visa and special permits are required depending on the areas you are planning to visit. A tour operator can guide you on these different requirements. Indians require an Inner Line Permit to visit Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and some areas of Sikkim, but do not need one to visit Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya.
- Weather Conditions:
North East is landslide prone zone and hence should be avoided during monsoons. Also most of the wild life sanctuaries like Kaziranga, Manas etc. remains closed due to floods that happen in North East during monsoon every year. The best time to visit North East is between October and April every year. If you are planning to visit Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh then, bring plenty of warm clothes as temperatures there take a dip to up to -2 degree during winter.
- Medicines to avoid motion sickness :
Few areas in North East are still not much developed with respect to motorable roads, as compared to rest of India. The drives are mostly bumpy and hence it is advisable to carry medicines in case you suffer from motion sickness.
- Phone and Internet:
In hotels or home stays situated in remote areas in North East India it is difficult to get a Wi-Fi connection. Mobile connection with 3G or 4G services are available in limited areas. So if you are a person who wants to give live updates on social media, then be prepared to post your updates after the trip.
- Hotel Accommodation:
Though in main cities like Guwahati and Shillong, it is not difficult to find hotels with state of the art facilities, in remote areas however, it might be difficult to get one with all the modern amenities. Hotels and homestays with modern day features are coming up gradually in the region. But in few places you might still have to adjust with bucket showers, Indian ways of toilet, sometimes frequent power cuts and limited eating options as well. For vegetarians, many parts of North East could be difficult.
- Proper Travel Itineraries:
North East is vast and scattered. So it is not possible to cover all the aesthetic places in one tour. Select the places you want to visit beforehand and check out the requirements that you might need, to explore those places. Here a tour operator can help you out with all your queries.
Like the Himalayas in the North, North East has a mystic beauty in it and travelling just one time is not enough to feel the beauty of these regions.
